Hello my name is ___, and I am reaching out to Mayor Yemi to ask him to sit down with COSAARPR to talk about police accountability and take action. 
    
   As a leader of our community, we are asking for your help in improving the safety and security of Colorado Springs citizens. The Colorado Springs Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (COSAARPR) is a grassroots organization fighting for the liberation of all oppressed people through engaging community members in political action. We envision a Colorado Springs - and world - without racism, discrimination, or political repression. Working alongside the families of victims of police misconduct and violence, we advocate for the proper care and professionalism these tragic incidents require.

So far, in 2026, we have already seen three officer-involved shootings in our city with no accountability from the offending officers and underwhelming empathy for the victims and their families. And across the United States, less than 3% of killings by police result in officers being charged with a crime. Officers are too often awarded for violent, targeted behavior while families are left broken. While we understand the complexities and difficult nature of policing, the decision to use lethal force by an officer should only ever be considered as a last resort - looking “suspicious” or running away should not result in death and does not conclude that one’s life is less worthy. And too often are officers either excused or awarded for this type of behavior. Colorado Springs residents deserve to feel safe and protected by our local police and the achievement of a trusting relationship between citizens and police requires complete transparency and external oversight.

To build trust and extend transparency there needs to be a public database of all police misconduct including, a photograph of the offending officer, name, badge number, and the current team the officer belongs to. Community members deserve to know what accusations have been levied against the officers that police them. Police Officers are meant to provide safety and security to a community while exhibiting a moral guidance and standard for those to follow.

The concealment of abusive, violent behavior at the hands of the police only fosters distrust within the community. And if the general population lacks trust in local police departments, fewer crimes will be reported or investigated; therefore, more criminals will walk free, and more lives will be negatively altered and lost.

COSAARPR's goal is to build a safer and more trustworthy relationship between citizens and those who police them and ultimately end the systemic racism and violent nature of policing. We want to work together to establish a democratically elected, independent police accountability council that protects and benefits all Colorado Springs residents. Currently, there is no system in place that has the power to hold police officers accountable outside of the department itself. With an accountability council in place, dangerous officers will be held accountable and citizens will be able to entrust their safety and lives in the hands of the police. Too many people have wrongfully lost their lives and too many families have been left heartbroken and incomplete. Police should work to prevent dangerous situations from occurring instead of creating them. We are pushing for a serious change in the way police misconduct in Colorado Springs is handled, and in a city that awards significant power to its Mayor, we believe you have the ability to work in collaboration with us to achieve the goal of a trustworthy relationship between the Colorado Springs Police Department and its residents, ultimately creating a safer community.

In summary we are asking you to take these actions:

- Establish A Civilian Police Oversight Committee that is all civilian, has power to hire and fire, power to open independent investigations into police misconduct, and is automatically part of bodies investigating deadly police incidents per Colorado Law.

- Reopen all excessive use of force cases over the last 10 years through an independent body.

- Release a public database of all police misconduct, including a picture of the officer, name, badge, and current department.
